Tuart Hill is an inner-northern suburb about 9 kilometres north of the Perth CBD within the City of Stirling, sitting between Yokine, Joondanna, and Osborne Park. The suburb takes its name from the majestic stands of tuart trees (Eucalyptus gomphocephala) that once grew extensively throughout the area, especially around Dog Swamp. Tuart Hill was part of the original 6,020-acre crown grant taken by T R C Walters in 1840. In 1872 a road to the settlement of Wanneroo was constructed through the area, and the local tuart trees became a landmark to travellers. In 1914 the suburb name of Grenville was proposed by the Grenville Progress Association but was not accepted due to its likeness to Granville in New South Wales – however, the original Grenville State School (1910) retains the name today as Tuart Hill Primary School and remains heritage-listed. Town Properties of Western Australia offered lots for sale, but development was slow due to the perceived remoteness of the area. Prior to World War II much of Tuart Hill was still used for rural purposes – the building of houses accelerated after the war and by the 1960s the suburb was fully developed. Since 1914 the Osborne Park Agricultural Society has held its annual show at Robinson Reserve. Servite College and Grenville Reserve serve as major community anchors. Tuart Hill contains a diverse housing mix – single residential dwellings, villas, terrace houses, and flats, with most homes constructed of brick but many timber-framed houses still standing. Older properties typically run post-war Austerity-era tilt doors and first-generation roller doors well past their rated lifespan.
