Stoneville is a hills suburb about 33 kilometres east of the Perth CBD within the Shire of Mundaring, sitting in the Darling Range between Parkerville and Mount Helena. The suburb takes its name from Sir Edward Albert Stone, who was Chief Justice of Western Australia when the locality was named in 1905. Settlement began in 1896 when a timber camp was established midway between Parkerville and Lion Mill (now Mount Helena) to cut sleepers and firewood. The camp was served by a private siding known as Adams and Dowie’s siding – the two men provided cords of firewood and hand-hewn sleepers to many Perth bakehouses and woodyards from this rail spur. In 1905, local residents who were developing the district for fruit growing named the siding Stoneville. The Stoneville Hall was built in 1944 to serve as a local school, with a community hall added in subsequent decades. Stoneville suffered devastating bushfires in January 2014 with significant property losses, and the suburb continues to be highly bushfire-prone. The town has around 2,000 residents on large hills blocks, with the proposed North Stoneville development a continuing point of community discussion. Most Stoneville properties are large lifestyle blocks with single or two-storey hills homes among jarrah and marri trees, with oversized double or triple garages plus separate workshop sheds, machinery storage, and outbuildings common.
