Mundaring is a Perth Hills town and the administrative centre of the Shire of Mundaring, about 34 kilometres east of the Perth CBD along Great Eastern Highway. The town owes its existence to viticulture and water. Peter Gugeri commenced wine-growing in 1882 along what is now Mundaring Weir Road; a sawmill in 1889 generated a railway stopping place called Gugeri’s Siding. Gugeri sold his vineyard to the Jacoby family who registered the Mundaring Vineyard Company, and by December 1894 the siding had been renamed Mundaring. The town was officially declared on 20 May 1898 when men started camping at the railway junction in hopes of work on the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme. Mundaring Weir, designed by engineer Charles Yelverton O’Connor, was completed in 1903 – at the time the highest overflow dam in the Southern Hemisphere – pumping water 557 kilometres to Kalgoorlie via eight steam pumping stations. Weekend picnic excursion trains to the weir ran from the 1910s until the late 1940s. Today Mundaring is a pleasant town of around 3,000 residents with the Mundaring Mall, Sculpture Park, Arts Centre, the start of the Munda Biddi Trail, and Lake Leschenaultia within reach. Most properties are large hills blocks with single and two-storey homes among jarrah and marri trees.
