Innaloo sits about 9 kilometres north of the Perth CBD within the City of Stirling, bounded by Karrinyup Road, Huntriss Road, Scarborough Beach Road, and the Mitchell Freeway. The suburb name was adopted in 1927 – the original name Njookenbooroo, derived from the Noongar name for nearby Herdsman Lake, was considered hard to spell and pronounce, so Daisy Bates suggested “Innaloo” instead, the name of an Aboriginal woman from Dongara. Land here was first granted to Thomas Mews in 1831, with serious residential development accelerating during and after World War Two. By 1970 most of Innaloo was complete, and the suburb’s status grew with the Nookenburra Hotel (1962), Westfield Innaloo Shopping Centre (1967), and the civic centre on Hertha Road (1966). Australia’s first Hungry Jack’s opened on Scarborough Beach Road in 1971. The suburb is now home to the Stirling City Centre, the Event Cinemas megaplex, IKEA, and Stirling railway station – making it one of the busiest commercial hubs in the northern corridor. The housing stock is mostly post-war timber-frame and brick-and-tile homes 60 to 80 years old, with infill duplexes, townhouses, and apartments increasingly common as density increases.
