Glendalough is an inner-western suburb about 5 kilometres north-west of the Perth CBD within the City of Stirling, sitting between Lake Monger (officially renamed Galup in 2025) and Herdsman Lake – the name means valley of the lakes, honouring the Catholic centre in Ireland where a hermitage was established in the 7th century. A crown grant for Glendalough and a portion of Herdsman Lake was made in 1837 to Thomas Helms and eventually transferred to Bishop Matthew Gibney in 1887, who leased much of it to market gardeners. The northern portion passed through several Roman Catholic orders until 1921, when the Little Sisters of the Poor used it as a rest home. In 1949 the State Housing Commission bought part of Glendalough for subdivision. Significant landmarks include the Glendalough Parish, originally built in 1898 as a reform school – the first building established by the Catholic Church within the modern City of Stirling boundaries. Glendalough train station serves as a major transfer station for bus connections to Scarborough Beach. Lake Monger Primary School and the Chrysalis Montessori School serve the local catchment. The majority of housing is brick and tile with timber floors. Most Glendalough homes are 1950s and 1960s State Housing Commission builds on standard suburban blocks, alongside post-2000 infill apartments around the station precinct.
