Daglish is a small western suburb about 4 kilometres west of the Perth CBD within the City of Subiaco, bounded by Railway Road, Lonnie Street, Selby Street, and Hay Street. The suburb sits on Spearwood Dunes – brown sand over yellow subsoil with Tamala Limestone below, part of the greater Swan Coastal Plain. Daglish was originally part of West Subiaco (now Shenton Park) until 1925, when the Subiaco Council negotiated with the Minister for Works to acquire the land east of Daglish railway station to create a new suburb of the same name. The land was subdivided and sold mainly to young couples attracted to the proximity of King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women across the railway line, and to railway workers commuting to the Midland Railway Workshops. Initial development was slow, with fewer than a dozen houses completed by 1928. Daglish was developed substantially during the 1930s when distinctively styled Workers Homes Board houses were erected – most remain today without significant alteration, providing a valuable example of the architectural styles of the period. The McCallum Avenue Precinct opposite Daglish railway station retains its original Inter-War character, including the unusually wide McCallum Avenue once used as a turning circle for horse-drawn wagons.
