Bedford is an inner-northern residential suburb about 6 kilometres north-east of the Perth CBD within the City of Bayswater, surrounded by Morley, Dianella, Inglewood, Bayswater, and Embleton. The suburb is named after Frederick Bedford, the Governor of Western Australia from 1903 to 1909. In the 1920s Beaufort Street was extended through to Salisbury Street and the Beaufort Street tram was extended as far as Salisbury Street – Gold Estates of Australia Pty Ltd subdivided the surrounding land for residential purposes. Some of the original 1920s homes still stand along Rosebery Street and Salisbury Street. The townsite of Bedford Park was gazetted on 18 June 1937, named for the former Governor, covering 53 hectares around the intersection of Beaufort Street and Grand Promenade. The Beaufort Street tramway closed in 1958 and was replaced by trolleybuses, which themselves closed in 1968. By the early 1970s most of Bedford was fully developed. The townsite name was officially shortened to Bedford in 1961. Today Bedford is predominantly low-density residential, consisting mainly of single-family detached homes with clusters of small commercial buildings along Beaufort Street, Grand Promenade, and Walter Road. The suburb contains Beaufort Park, Grand Promenade Reserve, and RA Cook Reserve for local sport and recreation. Most Bedford homes are 1920s through 1970s character builds on standard suburban blocks, with single or double garages running a mix of original tilt doors, first-generation roller doors, and second-generation sectional panel doors. The older properties often have completed 50,000+ cycles over the decades, putting components well past their rated lifespan.
