Swan View is an eastern suburb about 25 kilometres north-east of the Perth CBD on the edge of the Darling Scarp, just west of John Forrest National Park. The suburb falls across the City of Swan and the Shire of Mundaring, bounded by the Avonlink/Prospector railway line to the west, the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail to the south, the national park to the east, and Blackadder Creek to the north. Swan View is famous for the Swan View Tunnel – a former 340-metre railway tunnel constructed between 1894 and 1896 by Engineer-in-Chief C Y O’Connor as part of the Eastern Railway Deviation. Prior to the Subiaco station works in 1999, this was the only tunnel on the entire Western Australian railway network. The tunnel saw tragedy in November 1942 when both drivers and firemen on a double-header train were overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning – driver Tom Beer died. The line closed in 1966 and the tunnel reopened in 1988 as part of the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail, surrounded by John Forrest National Park (Western Australia’s first national park, proclaimed 1900). The suburb is almost entirely residential and parkland. Most Swan View homes are 30 to 60 years old, with project-builder family homes from the 1960s through to the 2000s on substantial blocks featuring double garages.
